In Shantae, your goal is to guide the half-genie heroine through vibrant, side-scrolling stages, defeating enemies and overcoming platforming challenges. You move Shantae with the D-pad, using the A button to jump and the B button to attack with her signature hair whip. As you explore, you'll find new magical transformations, like a monkey for climbing walls or an elephant for breaking obstacles, which are essential for accessing hidden areas and progressing. The game features interconnected towns and dungeons, requiring you to backtrack with new abilities to unlock previously unreachable paths. Combat involves timing your hair whip attacks to defeat enemies while avoiding their projectiles and environmental hazards. Boss battles at the end of each major area test your pattern recognition and reflexes. A key strategy is to collect gems to purchase items and power-ups from shops, which can restore health or provide temporary advantages.
