Players engage in one-on-one martial arts combat across two-out-of-three round matches. The joystick controls movement, jumping, and crouching, while six buttons provide light, medium, and heavy variations of punches and kicks. Each character possesses unique special moves triggered by specific motion inputs, such as the Hadoken or Sonic Boom. Mastery involves learning to block incoming attacks by holding backward, managing spacing to keep opponents at bay, and identifying openings to execute powerful combos. In the early stages, focus on understanding your character's reach and basic attacks. As the match progresses, utilize the ability to play as the four Grand Masters—Balrog, Vega, Sagat, and M. Bison—who offer distinct high-power strategies. Manage your health bar carefully and look for opportunities to trap opponents in the corner or bait them into punishable mistakes. The addition of mirror matches means you must also be prepared to fight against your own character, requiring a deep understanding of your own weaknesses to prevail.
