In The King of Fighters '97 Plus, players select a team of three fighters to engage in elimination-style 2D martial arts battles against opposing teams. The core objective is to deplete each opponent's health bar across consecutive rounds using a mix of high and low strikes, aerial attacks, throws, and character-specific special moves. Using a four-button arcade setup for Light Punch, Heavy Punch, Light Kick, and Heavy Kick, players navigate the arena by walking, running, jumping, and crouching. Defensively, pulling the joystick backward blocks incoming strikes, while pressing Light Punch and Light Kick together executes an evasive roll to bypass projectiles and punish predictable attacks. This modified edition accelerates gameplay by granting instant access to powerful hidden characters such as Orochi Iori, Orochi Leona, and the Orochi Team alongside rapid power gauge accumulation. Beginners should focus on mastering basic motion inputs, such as quarter-circle directional turns combined with attack buttons to execute special moves and screen-clearing Desperation Moves. In early moments of a round, poke opponents with long-range normal strikes and jump-in attacks. As health dwindles, use fast command resets and power specials to turn the tide and win high-tension engagements.
