In Dig Dug, your primary goal is to clear each stage by eliminating all underground monsters, specifically the round, red Pookas and the green, fire-breathing Fygars. You navigate the protagonist, Taizo Hori, through the dirt using four-directional movement, carving out tunnels as you go. To defeat enemies, you must use your air pump to inflate them until they burst or lure them under large rocks to crush them. The air pump requires multiple presses to fully expand an enemy, and if you stop early, the monster will slowly deflate and resume its chase. Success depends on managing the movement of multiple enemies at once. As the game progresses, monsters will transform into ghostly forms to pass through solid dirt, making them harder to reach or avoid. Pay close attention to Fygars, as they can breathe fire horizontally even through thin walls of earth. A key strategy is to time your digging so that rocks fall on clusters of enemies for high bonus points. Be careful not to stand directly under a rock once it starts wobbling, as it will fall and crush your character as well.
