The core objective of Ridge Racer 64 is to win races by mastering high-speed drifting around corners. Moment-to-moment play involves accelerating with the A button, braking or initiating drifts with the B button, and using the control stick to steer. A key beginner strategy is to learn the timing for power slides: tap the brake while turning to kick the rear end out, then counter-steer to maintain control and gain a speed boost upon straightening out. In the early part of a race, focus on clean driving to build up your nitrous boost meter by staying in a drift for extended periods. During the middle of the race, use your nitrous boosts strategically on long straights to overtake opponents. In tense final laps, balance aggressive drifting with avoiding collisions, as hitting walls or other cars will slow you down significantly. The challenge rhythm is built around memorizing track layouts to perfect your drift lines and boost management.
