The core objective of Altered Beast is to battle through waves of undead creatures and demonic monsters across various mythological stages, ultimately defeating grotesque bosses to rescue Zeus's daughter, Athena. Players navigate the side-scrolling levels using directional controls to move, alongside dedicated buttons to punch, kick, and jump. Early in each stage, you must defeat special white-suited wolves to collect spiritual orbs known as Spirit Balls. Collecting a single orb upgrades your physical attributes, while gathering a second triggers a dramatic cinematic transformation into a powerful beast such as a werewolf, dragon, bear, or tiger. In your transformed state, your attacks are enhanced with magical projectiles, devastating dashes, or area-of-effect abilities, shifting the moment-to-moment gameplay from a careful melee brawl into aggressive onslaughts. As the challenge rhythm intensifies, timing your jumps and mastering your beast's special attack are crucial for surviving swarms of flying enemies and relentless ground attackers.
