Metal Slug Advance is a side-scrolling run-and-gun game where your objective is to survive through enemy-filled stages, defeat bosses, and rescue prisoners of war. You control a soldier who can run, jump, and shoot in eight directions. You start with a basic pistol but can pick up powerful weapon power-ups like the Heavy Machine Gun, Rocket Launcher, and Shotgun, which have limited ammo. Use grenades to clear groups of enemies or damage armored vehicles. The game introduces a card collection system; finding hidden cards in each stage unlocks bonuses and artwork, encouraging exploration. In the early stages, focus on learning enemy patterns and conserving special weapon ammo for tougher enemies and bosses. During tense moments, such as boss fights, keep moving to avoid attacks and aim for weak points. The challenge rhythm involves navigating platforming hazards while fending off constant enemy assaults.
