Your primary objective is to pilot Fox McCloud's Arwing through enemy-filled corridors and open combat zones, destroying all hostile forces and defeating boss enemies to complete each mission. Moment-to-moment play involves maneuvering your ship to aim a targeting reticle at enemies, firing your blaster to eliminate them, and performing barrel rolls with the Z-trigger to deflect incoming fire. You can also perform a U-turn or somersault for quick directional changes. Collect silver rings to replenish your health shield and gold rings to increase your maximum health. In the early stages, focus on mastering basic flight controls and aiming while destroying as many enemies as possible to earn medals, which unlock expert mode. During tense combat or boss fights, keep moving to avoid enemy lock-ons and use your limited supply of Smart Bombs to clear the screen of threats when overwhelmed. The game features branching paths; performing well by defeating specific enemies or fulfilling hidden objectives allows you to access alternative, more challenging routes.
