Your goal is to prevent zombies from reaching the left side of the screen by strategically placing plants on a grid. You start by choosing seeds for your arsenal, each with unique abilities and sun costs. Sunflowers generate sun, the game's currency, which you collect to afford offensive and defensive plants like Peashooters, Wall-nuts, and Cherry Bombs. Zombies approach from the right across several lanes, and you must manage your sun economy while placing plants to stop them. Early on, focus on planting multiple Sunflowers to build a strong income. As waves intensify, diversify your defenses with plants that slow, damage, or instantly defeat zombies. Tense moments require quick thinking, such as using instant-use plants like the Potato Mine or Jalapeno to handle large groups or special zombies. The game includes a DS-exclusive versus mode where one player controls the plants and the other controls the zombies, adding a competitive twist.
