Your goal in Lode Runner is to collect all the gold pieces on each level while avoiding the relentless enemy guards. You control your character from a side-view perspective, running and climbing ladders across a grid-based stage. Your primary tool is the ability to dig holes directly to your left or right, which can temporarily trap enemies. These holes will refill after a short time, so timing is crucial. A key strategy is to lure guards over a spot you plan to dig, trapping them so you can safely collect gold that was previously out of reach. The challenge escalates as levels introduce more complex layouts and faster, smarter enemies. In the early stages, focus on learning the digging mechanics and enemy movement patterns. Later, you'll need to plan intricate routes, using holes not just for defense but also to create new pathways by destroying blocks. During tense moments, stay calm and always have an escape route planned, as getting cornered by multiple guards often leads to a quick defeat.
