To play Trombone Champ, your primary objective is to match the pitch and rhythm of on-screen musical notes by moving the trombone slide up and down while pressing the play button. As the song scrolls across the screen, keep a close eye on the moving track and adjust your mouse, gamepad stick, or touch controls precisely to hit each note right on target. Timing your presses and holding notes for their full duration will rack up your score and fill your meter, but missing too many notes will cause your performance to suffer. In the early stages of a song, focus on getting comfortable with the general tempo and slide sensitivity. As the track progresses into the middle and tense climax moments, notes will appear faster and require quicker, more erratic movements. Pay attention to the special Honk button, which can be pressed at any time to add your own humorous flair to the music. Master the rhythm, anticipate rapid pitch shifts, and maintain your combo to achieve the legendary Trombone Champ rank by the end of the song.
