In Spider-Man: Battle for New York, you primarily control Spider-Man through a 2D side-scrolling perspective. Your core objective is to fight through waves of enemies across various city locations, using a combination of melee attacks, web-based abilities, and quick dodges. Spider-Man can punch, kick, and swing from webs to navigate platforms, while his web shooters can immobilize foes from a distance. As Green Goblin, you have a separate campaign with different mechanics, focusing on gliding and projectile attacks with the Goblin Glider and pumpkin bombs. The game features touch screen mini-games on the DS for certain actions or puzzle sequences. A useful beginner strategy is to master the dodge move to avoid enemy attacks, then counter with a quick combo. In the early stages, focus on learning the attack patterns of basic thugs. During the middle of a run, manage your health by using environmental objects for cover and webbing enemies before engaging larger groups.
