The game follows traditional Xiangqi rules where pieces move along the lines rather than the squares, and certain pieces are restricted to their own side of the river. Beginners should focus on protecting their general while developing their stronger pieces like chariots and horses to control the center of the board. The cannon is particularly powerful when positioned behind another piece, allowing it to capture enemy pieces by jumping over the intervening piece. As the game progresses, players must balance offensive pressure with defensive positioning, watching for opportunities to create checkmate threats while preventing their opponent from doing the same. The endgame often involves careful maneuvering of remaining pieces to force the opponent into an inescapable position.
