Designed by Gunpei Yokoi, the creator of the Game Boy, after he left Nintendo, the WonderSwan launched in Japan in 1999. It ran for a remarkably long time on a single AA battery and could be held vertically or horizontally depending on the game.
It never left Japan, which is why the library is almost entirely untranslated at retail: Final Fantasy remakes, Gunpey, Digimon and a set of Square titles that appeared nowhere else.
The WonderSwan was designed to be held either way. Vertical games display rotated, and the player lets you switch orientation to match.
The platform was Japan-only, so most titles are in Japanese. Puzzle and action games are generally playable regardless of language.
