In Populous, you play as a god overseeing a tribe of followers on an isometric landscape. Your objective is to grow your population while destroying the opposing tribe controlled by the computer. You start with a small group of followers and must use your divine powers to shape the land, creating habitable flat areas for building settlements. As your population grows, you gain more mana to cast powerful spells like earthquakes, volcanoes, and swamps to disrupt your enemy's development. The core gameplay involves balancing land sculpting with strategic spellcasting, watching your civilization expand while systematically dismantling your opponent's territory. Early game focuses on establishing a stable population base, mid-game involves strategic spell usage to gain advantages, and late game requires careful management of your remaining mana for decisive attacks against the enemy's stronghold.
