Released as the PC Engine in Japan in 1987 and the TurboGrafx-16 in the West two years later, NEC and Hudson’s console paired an 8-bit CPU with a 16-bit graphics chip. It briefly outsold the Famicom in Japan and never found an audience in North America.

The library is a shooter landmark — Blazing Lazers, Air Zonk, the Bonk platformers — and the CD-ROM add-on made it the first console with a CD drive, years ahead of anyone else.
