Your goal is to win tennis matches against various opponents from the Mario universe. You control your character on a 2D court, moving with the D-pad and using the A and B buttons to hit different types of shots, such as lobs and slices. Timing your swing is crucial; hitting the ball at the peak of its bounce or during a special flash will execute a more powerful shot. Each character has a unique special shot that can be charged and unleashed to turn the tide of a rally. The core strategy involves anticipating your opponent's returns, aiming for the corners of the court to create openings, and managing your energy meter to use special shots effectively. In the early stages, focus on learning your character's strengths and the timing for different swings. As you progress, you'll need to read your opponent's patterns and master the counter-shot system, where using the opposite shot type (e.g., a slice against a topspin) can break their rhythm. During tense moments, such as deuce or a tie-breaker, stay patient, avoid unforced errors, and save your special shot for a critical point to secure the game.
