Your goal is to progress through stages, defeat the eight Maverick bosses, and stop the Repliforce's rebellion. As X, you rely on your charged Buster shot and can collect armor upgrades. As Zero, you use a powerful energy sword for close-range combat and learn special techniques from defeated bosses. A good beginner strategy is to start with X for a more traditional ranged playstyle, and tackle bosses in an order that gives you weapons effective against others. Focus on learning enemy patterns and mastering dash-jumps to navigate tricky platforming sections. In tense moments, use your special weapons strategically to deal massive damage or create breathing room.
