Players navigate a grid-based battlefield, commanding individual units with unique classes and abilities. The core combat revolves around the Weapon Triangle—swords beat axes, axes beat lances, and lances beat swords—as well as a similar system for magic. On your turn, select a unit to move, then choose an action such as attack, use an item, or wait. Positioning is critical; placing units on defensive terrain like forests or forts provides evasion and health bonuses, while keeping fragile healers and archers behind heavily armored knights prevents them from being targeted by the enemy. Success requires careful planning for permanent consequences, as characters who fall in battle are gone forever. In the early game, focus on training your lords—Lyn, Eliwood, and Hector—and balancing experience across your team. As the difficulty ramps up, prioritize checking enemy ranges and equipment to avoid ambushes. During tense encounters, use Support conversations to boost unit stats and utilize the Rescue command to pull vulnerable allies out of harm's way before the enemy phase begins.
