Your goal is to guide Richter Belmont through six stages of gothic environments, using your Vampire Killer whip and sub-weapons to defeat monsters. You move with the D-pad, jump with one button, and attack with another. Press up and attack to use a sub-weapon like the axe or holy water, which consumes hearts collected from candles. The cross boomerangs forward, the axe arcs overhead, and the holy water creates a damaging puddle. Your whip can be swung forward or angled slightly up or down by holding the D-pad. Mastering the timing of your attacks and jumps is crucial, as enemies appear from all directions and platforms are often precarious. In the early stages, focus on breaking every candle to stockpile hearts for boss fights. Memorize enemy patterns and use the appropriate sub-weapon for each situation; the holy water is excellent for stunning ground-based foes. The challenge escalates quickly, so conserve health by avoiding contact damage and pits. During tense moments, like boss battles, keep your distance, watch for tells, and strike during their recovery frames. A well-timed Item Crash, activated by pressing both buttons while holding a sub-weapon, can turn the tide with a powerful screen-clearing attack, but it consumes many hearts.
