In Ogre Battle 64, you command a squad-based army on a gridless battlefield viewed from an isometric perspective. Your primary goal is to liberate towns and defeat enemy units to progress the story. You manage your army at a home base between battles, where you can recruit new units, purchase equipment, and assign characters to squads. Each squad moves autonomously on the battlefield; you set their initial formation and general behavior, but they engage enemies automatically when in range. Positioning is key, as units attack from the front, side, or rear based on their placement within a 3x3 grid formation. Your alignment and reputation are affected by your choices, such as how you treat captured enemies or civilians, which ultimately determines the game's multiple endings. Early on, focus on building balanced squads with a mix of melee, ranged, and healing units. As the game progresses, you'll need to adapt your army composition to counter specific enemy types and manage your resources carefully to fund your war effort.
