In Ogre Battle 64, you command a squad-based army on a gridless battlefield viewed from an isometric perspective. Your primary goal is to liberate towns and defeat enemy units to progress the story. You manage your army at a home base between battles, where you can recruit new units, purchase equipment, and assign characters to squads. Each squad moves autonomously on the battlefield; you set their initial formation and general behavior, but they engage enemies automatically when in range.
