Dead or Alive is a 3D fighting game where the primary objective is to deplete your opponent's health bar to win rounds and ultimately the match. Moment-to-moment play involves a rock-paper-scissors system of strikes, throws, and holds (counterattacks). Strikes are fast attacks that beat throws, throws are unblockable attacks that beat holds, and holds are defensive maneuvers that can counter specific strikes. The arenas are multi-tiered, allowing you to knock opponents off ledges for extra damage. A useful beginner strategy is to focus on learning a few basic combos and the timing for the universal hold, which can counter mid-level punches and kicks. The challenge rhythm is fast and aggressive, with matches often decided by successful reads and counter opportunities. In the early moments of a match, focus on observing your opponent's patterns. In the middle of a fight, use the environment to your advantage by positioning yourself near edges. During tense moments, a well-timed hold can completely reverse the momentum and secure a victory.
