Your objective is to survive each stage, defeat enemies, and rescue prisoners of war. You control your character with a joystick for movement and buttons for jumping, shooting, and throwing grenades. The core gameplay involves running, jumping over obstacles, and shooting everything that moves. Collect power-ups to upgrade your standard pistol to heavy weapons like the Heavy Machine Gun, Rocket Launcher, or the iconic Metal Slug tank. A key beginner strategy is to master the jump-and-shoot technique to avoid enemy fire while maintaining offensive pressure. Focus on memorizing enemy patterns and level layouts in the early stages. In the middle of a run, prioritize rescuing POWs for bonus points and weapon rewards. During tense moments, especially against bosses, constantly move to avoid attacks and use your most powerful weapons strategically. The challenge rhythm is fast-paced, with screen-filling bosses requiring pattern recognition and quick reflexes.
